Friends of Crowborough Common

An initial proposal for a 'Friends of Crowborough Common' was presented to Malcolm Wilson, Chairman of Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, in February 2009.  The aims and objectives of the society would be to promote the conservation, maintenance, preservation and peaceful enjoyment of the common for all its users.

As a 'Society', the Friends of Crowborough Common would be able to apply for grants and funding for the upkeep of the large areas of the common that are not used as a golf course.  Often these funds are not available to the golf club due to its status as a private business.

We look forward to the golf club's response to our proposal.

Common Vision

This is a beautifully presented film about the importance of commons in Southern England.  It discusses ways of engaging with local communities to ensure that these much valued open spaces can be " a treat for the eye and a breath of fresh air in an increasingly urban world'  for everyone.

'Common Vision - Preserving our Common Land For the Future' is available to view at:

English Nature

On February 12th, 2009, Natural England published their commissioned report into 'Trends in pastoral commoning'.  Pages 84 - 86 are concerned with Lowland Commons and the Countryside Commission makes a plea for local distinctiveness. The report says that  'each common has its own local character and often reflects much of the history of an area'.  The findings will be used by Natural England, Defra and others when considering environmental policies and the development of management schemes suitable for protecting public interests on common lands.
